Love of reading has been an essential part of Georgetown County since Plantation owners and the Winyah Indigo Society compiled extensive libraries more than 100 years ago. In 1908, the Society offered its handsome building for use as a subscription library that eventually became the Georgetown Public Library.

The Georgetown County Public Library System has four locations. Service from library headquarters in Georgetown is extended to the entire county through regular visits of a modern bookmobile. In 2007, the Georgetown County Public Library System became the first institution in South Carolina to receive a national medal for community service provided by museums and libraries. This award was presented in the White House in Washington, D.C.

Friends of the Georgetown County Library actively support the library system, which reflects the continuing growth of the community’s awareness of the library services’ value.

To receive a library card, applicants must complete a registration card and present proper identification showing the applicant’s name and local address. For more information, visit
